Reports, meetings, and presentations can shape strategy, but they can’t replicate the pressure of production floors or the rhythm of factories where global brands are produced. This is where the reality gap lies between what professionals see on paper and the world they are expected to lead, decide and deliver in every day.
BRIDGING THE GAP
Fashion isn’t as simple as the final garment you see in a store. There’s an entire chain of people, events and processes behind it. Fiber turning into yarn, yarn into fabric, then cutting, stitching, washing, checking, packing, and finally shipping across the world. Most students never get to see this process end-to-end and because of that, many choose their careers without fully understanding what roles actually exist in the industry. It’s like asking them to pick a dish without knowing what’s on the menu.

Consider a $300 shirt at Nordstrom. Many in the industry can describe parts of how it arrived there, yet only a small percentage can map the complete journey from concept to retail. The full puzzle exists but most professionals only hold a few scattered pieces.
During my three decades in this industry, I’ve met brand owners, designers and merchandisers. Often their questions revealed a deep gap between how garment factories and mills actually work and how they think they work.
Having worked my way up from the trenches, I know how easily talented people drift into the wrong roles simply because they never had the chance to understand the landscape before….
